The drop down menu features my advising philosophy, my current duties, and my accomplishments and reflections. Here, I'd like to share where I've been and how I came to what I'm doing now.
I began my career in higher education directly after I finished my B.A. I applied and was accepted as a College Access Advisor for the Utah College Advising Corps, an initiative funded by a grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. I was placed at Taylorsville High School on the west side of Salt Lake City, and tasked with assisting high school students in all things college related - outreach, ACT/SAT testing, Financial Aid/FAFSA applications, scholarships, college exploration and more. Our target population to assist was first-generation, low-income, and students of color, but I helped anyone who came to my office.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a College Access Advisor, but the position had a two year limit. The job with the most similarities to my experience was Academic Advising, so I decided to pursue it and see where it took me. I landed at Salt Lake Community College, only a few blocks down the street from Taylorsville High School, and I worked as a General Academic Advisor for two years. There, I saw much of the same population as I had previously, but I was able to assist them toward graduation and encourage them to pursue a university level degree after.
My time at SLCC reinforced my affinity for advising, and I wanted to obtain a full time position at the university level. This led me to the Department of Languages and Literature at the University of Utah, where I currently am employed. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with a specific set of students and expand my knowledge of higher education and student affairs, and I love working in such a multi-national environment. My experience and approach to advising grows and changes almost daily, and I invite you to look at my current duties and reflections to see more.
